| Record Description | This record shows the fine ancient hedgerow ash and crab apple which, together with planted larch and oak trees are such a distinctive feature of the landscape of Clapgate Gill. Clapgate, rich in earthworks of medieval and earlier date is surely one of the most picturesque of the tributary dales of Swaledale. Most of these trees are visible from the old road from Richmond to Marske, but careful driving and parking will be needed to see them. |

| Additional Notes | It is important that a good photographic record is made of the fine old ash trees which are so distinctive a presence in Swaledale in the sad event that they are infected by the current pathogen threatening the Nation's Ash Trees. However all surviving ash trees in the Dales are and have been reducing in number from wind fall every year. These old trees have enjoyed a long hard life and will not be replaced by mass planting of trees which will always look like plantations and these will have a different future. |
